crack cocaine disparity

Crack-Cocaine Disparity

The chemical makeup of powder cocaine and crack cocaine is very similar, but the criminal response couldn't be more different. Until 2010, the federal sentence for crack cocaine was 100 times greater than for powder cocaine. Currently, the federal sentencing disparity is 18 to 1 and several states have crack cocaine disparities as well. These drug sentences disproportionally impact poor people and people of color.
